About this winery

Founded in 1879 by the brothers Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asua, the Compañia Vinicola del Norte de España is one of the oldest estates in La Rioja. C.V.N.E. is located in Haro, in the traditional wine trade district, next to the train station. In this period when transport was not very advanced, there was a definite advantage in locating your cellar very close to a train station! By 1900, this company had more than 80,000 bottles intended for prolonged aging, which was rare at that time...

Luis Gutiérrez, July 2026 (Vintage 2024)

Despite a challenging, unusually wet growing season and a hot summer, careful vineyard management delivered fresh, highly aromatic wines like the 2024 Bela, with excellent balance, silky tannins and vibrant acidity. It was produced with their grapes from Villalba de Duero (mentioned on the label), harvested into 300-kilogram harvest bins and fermented in stainless steel. It matured in French oak barrels for nine months and comes in at 14.1% alcohol, with a pH of 3.65 and 5.3 grams of acidity, parameters of ripeness, freshness and balance, reflecting the more balanced year. The wine is serious and balanced, with restraint and elegance, and it has integrated oak and a classical old-style profile. They managed to tame the power that comes from the abundant clay in Villalba, and they have managed to come to a balance, delivering a wine that is fine-boned and has elegant tannins but is neatly compensated by the acidity. It's very Ribera, and very good at this price point. 75,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2025.

Luis Gutiérrez, July 2026 (Vintage 2023)

The 2023 Crianza was produced with grapes from Villalba de Duero. It fermented with selected yeasts in stainless steel and matured in barrique for 12 months. It comes in at 14.3% alcohol, with a pH of 3.66 and 5.2 grams of acidity. The 2023s are darker and riper in general, with more fruit and a more exuberant profile, but they still keep the balance and poise. The wine is juicy and has abundant, slightly dusty tannins, which aren't helped by the fact that, to achieve the Crianza back label, the wine is required to age in 225-liter barrels-if they use larger barrels, the wine doesn't qualify. Still, it's a step above the 2022. 50,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2025.
