Marsannay Longeroies 2015

(these 70+-year-old vines, an old massalle selection from Clair-Dau, produced a solid 35 hectoliters per hectare in 2015, according to Frédéric Barnier, who compared the high quality of these vines to Jadot's Beaune aux Cras): Healthy dark red. Subtle, deep aromas of dark berries, spices and peppery herbs. Supple, broad and dry; a distinct step up in texture and depth from the Clos du Roy, showing lovely dark fruit and spice flavors. The tannins arrive late, dusting the palate but not cutting off the fruit. A superb Marsannay with sweetness, length and class. (Jadot's Côte de Nuits-Villages, from vines next to Clos de la Maréchale in Premeaux-Prissey, was distinctly medicinal and cool, and too clenched and tough to assess with confidence.)
