À propos du domaine Maynard's

Maynard's est la marque phare de la société Vinihold's de Fernando et Alvaro Van Zeller. Nommée d'après le premier expéditeur de vin de Porto anglais établi à Porto, la marque Maynard rend hommage à l'histoire de feu Walter Maynard, né en 1652, illustre ancêtre de la famille van Zeller par son mariage avec Dorothea Augusta Kopke, enregistré comme l'un des premiers négociants à exporter du vin de Porto en Angleterre.

The NV 10 Years Old Tawny Port (Maynard's) comes in at 104 grams per liter of residual sugar and was bottled in 2015. Friendly and laid back, this has an easy going feel with lush fruit and a sweet finish. It has just enough concentration of flavor to be a real tawny and the finish is surprisingly persistent for a wine that seemed so elegant and unassuming, but it is a bit unfocused. The flavor medley is laced with rhubarb and herbs. If it is sometimes a bit too understated, overall it is a nice value. That said, the Feurheed's 10 from the winery is only another $2, but it seems like a significant upgrade.

The 20 Years Old Tawny Port (Maynard's) comes in at 109 grams per liter of residual sugar. A nice step up on the 10 Year Old Maynard's, also reviewed, this adds some weight, but more importantly, concentration of flavor--those old, classic Tawny nuances. Very pleasing, yet easy to drink, this is a charming 20 that should be available at a nice price. This is the new release, bottled in 2015

The NV 30 Years Old Tawny Port Maynard's is a traditional blend with 111 grams per liter of residual sugar. It was bottled in 2016--in a rather odd bottle looking like a Mateus Rosé. The wine is a lot better than that, happily. This was the first release of this bottling with this presentation. A bit hard and a little harsh on the end, it evolves a bit in the glass and then shows off its best points--the amazing structure, the precision and focus. There still seemed to be just a touch of alcohol on the finish, a little too much brandy. It is dry and persistent, otherwise exceptional. In fairness to this bottling, it was only bottled the day before being seen--but since it was hand bottled just to show it to me, said Alvaro van Zeller, it was fine to present. Hence, this note.
