About this winery

Since 1934 this Château has produced its own bottles and the Devillard family is in its 5th generation of wine growers passionate about grapes and wine. Located in Mercurey in the greater Burgundy region, the 37 hectare vineyard benefits from all the typical attributes of the region, which the Devillards combine with rigorous vinification, always waiting for the maximum maturity of the fruits before starting their work.

Product notes

Le Clos des Ruelles is a 2.5 hectare monopoly plot, with vines planted in 1954 and the 1980s. The soil is brick red in color reflecting a high concentration of ferric oxide.

Production notes

The grapes are harvested by hand, sorted by hand and 100% destemmed. Aging 14 months in 100% 228L oak barrels, 25% of which are in new barrels, then for 3 months in stainless steel vats.

Tasting notes

Beautiful intense ruby color with purple reflections. The nose is complex with notes of liquorice, wild strawberries and pepper. The wine presents a beautiful structure with melted tannins and a beautiful aromatic persistence. Pairings with beef bourguignon and wild boar stew.

April 2021 (Vintage 2018)

Though luscious and saturated with blackberry, black cherry and plum flavors, this red is also dense and well-constructed, with elements of chocolate and spice on the long finish. Fine harmony. Drink now through 2030.

The 2019 Mercurey 1er Cru Les Ruelles is also performing very well, unwinding to reveal aromas of ripe cherries and berries mingled with petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's elegantly muscular, with succulent acids and ripe, powdery tannins.

The 2018 Mercurey 1er Cru Les Ruelles opens in the glass with notes of cassis, plums, smoked meats and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, with fine depth and concentration, bright acids and a flavorful finish, it's a definite success.

Aromas of raspberries, forest floor, grilled meats and raw cocoa introduce the 2017 Mercurey 1er Cru Les Ruelles, a medium to full-bodied wine that's one of the chewier, more rustic wines in the range this year, revealing a firm and tight-knit core buttressed by tangy acids.

Allen Meadows, October 2019 (Vintage 2018)

This broad-ranging nose is very ripe though not roasted or jammy with its cassis, black cherry, raspberry, spice and earth scents. The highly seductive velvet-texture flavors possess better depth on the rustic, powerful and serious finish. This mildly warm effort should reward extended cellaring.

This is aromatically quite similar to the Clos l'Évêque except that the menthol character is a bit more prominent here. There is a lovely sense of vibrancy to the well-detailed and delicious middle weight flavors that aren't quite as concentrated though they are finer, all wrapped in a youthfully austere finale. This is really quite good and a wine that should reward up to a decade of bottle age.

Allen Meadows, October 2018 (Vintage 2017)

A cool, airy and pretty nose combines aromas of dark cherry with those of spice, earth and a whiff of oak. The equally sleek though less obviously structured middle weight flavors possess a lovely sense of verve while exhibiting sneaky good length on the velvety and sappy finish. Fine quality here.

Cask sample. Curious! A combination of charred wood, cooked cherries, mint and redcurrant. Just as esoteric as their village Mercurey but much more convincing, with wonderfully strange flavours that reflect the variety to be found in Burgundy – although that may be in part due to a dose of acetic influence.
