About this winery

Since 1934 this Château has produced its own bottles and the Devillard family is in its 5th generation of wine growers passionate about grapes and wine. Located in Mercurey in the greater Burgundy region, the 37 hectare vineyard benefits from all the typical attributes of the region, which the Devillards combine with rigorous vinification, always waiting for the maximum maturity of the fruits before starting their work.

Product notes

10 small village plots and 3 Premier Cru plots (En Sazenay; Champs-Martin; Clos L'Évêque) make up this Mercurey Rouge. Climate & Soil: The plots are essentially clay-limestone with predominantly clay.

Production notes

The grapes are harvested by hand, sorted by hand and partially or 100% destemmed depending on the vintage. At devatting, free-run and press wine are carefully separated and aged separately. The wine is aged for 12 months at 80% in oak barrels of which 10% new barrels and 20% in stainless steel vats.

Tasting notes

Beautiful garnet ruby color, limpid and brilliant. The nose develops notes of cherry and strawberry. The wine offers a nice balance with fine and delicate tannins. Pairings with pork chops, BBQ sausages and deli.

William Kelley, July 2021 (Vintage 2019)

Produced from 10 different parcels, the 2019 Mercurey exhibits aromas of plums, spices, orange rind and petals. Medium-bodied, lively and elegant, with melting tannins and a charming core of fruit, it's a fine introduction to the estate's range.

Allen Meadows, October 2020 (Vintage 2019)

A discreet though still perceptible touch of wood sets off ripe aromas of white fruit compote and pretty citrus wisps. The dense and very rich flavors coat the palate with sappy dry extract while delivering good persistence on the nicely dry and sneaky long finish. This is sufficiently rich that it could easily be enjoyed young if desired.

Allen Meadows, October 2022 (Vintage 2021)

An exuberant nose of pure pinot aromas gives way to acceptably concentrated flavors that possess a succulent and rounded mid-palate while exhibiting very good depth and persistence on the attractively textured if youthfully austere finale. This should both drink well young and repay 4 to 7 years of keeping.

January 2021 (Vintage 2018)

Un pinot mûr, frais et fin, très marqué par les cerises rouges, plus charnu et harmonieux que l’an dernier. Ce fruit juteux plaira à tous, son boisé est très bien intégré.

Julia Harding, January 2023 (Vintage 2021)

Lightish crimson. Red-fruited but not sweet – more cranberry than strawberry. A little bit austere. Very fresh. The tannins are firm and highlight the acidity. It's not expensive but it's a little bit rustic.

Allen Meadows, August 2023 (Vintage 2022)

Fresh aromas of essence of pear, pear and lemon rind are trimmed in just enough wood to mention. There is both good energy and delineation to the solidly voluminous middleweight flavors that conclude in an agreeably dry and clean finish that is reasonably long if not especially complex. To enjoy young.

Julia Harding, January 2024 (Vintage 2022)

Lightish crimson. Sour-cherry freshness on the nose, cranberry tang and a touch peppery. Chewy yet smooth tannins. Respectable, balanced if not charming
