About this winery

It was with the acquisition of Beaune Premier Cru Clos des Ursules that the history of Maison Louis Jadot began in 1826. It took Louis Henry Denis Jadot thirty years to found the House in 1859, and to establish the values of this family business. By developing the wine trade in the markets of northern Europe, he was already contributing to the reputation of Burgundy wines at the time. Several generations succeeded each other at the head of the family business, but his signature on the...

Product notes

Starting from Beaune, Nuits Saint Georges is the first large village on the Côte de Nuits. Composed of limestone and marl, and exposure to the east allows to produce superb wines. The Premier Cru "Les Boudots" is located in the commune of Nuits, on the edge of that of Vosne-Romanée, just below the Damodes.

Production notes

The harvest is manual in small crates in order to preserve the integrity of the fruit. The grapes are macerated in open wooden or stainless steel vats for 3 to 4 weeks. The vats are punched twice a day during fermentation. Aging lasts about 18 months in barrels, about a third of which are new.

Tasting notes

The 1er Cru Les Boudots (from 70-year-old vines from the Gagey family estate) offers a tiled color with sweet spices, vanilla, plum and black cherry. The tannins are refined to the point of being silky. Rich in resonance and dynamic on the finish, it conceals a depth of fruit and smoky mineral flavors. Pairings with hare stew, beef bourguignon and eggs meurette.

May 2023 (Vintage 2020)

Supple and silky in texture, this red is elegant, bordering on racy. Delivers cherry, raspberry, violet and spice flavors that are beautifully balanced with the solid structure. Tightens up on the finish, a good sign of future potential, yet remains persistent and resonant, with the fruit, spice and mineral elements lingering. Best from 2025 through 2043

Allen Meadows, April 2010 (Vintage 2008)

A stylish and highly layered nose features notes of natural spice, oak and pungent earth, all of which carry over to the supple and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that possess fine depth and while the finish is admirably persistent, it's also noticeably tangy. Perhaps this is the CO2 influence but that isn't clear. Benefit of the doubt offered in this case.

Jancis Robinson, November 2019 (Vintage 2008)

Dark fruits on the nose, with white pepper and a lick of smoke. Silky, refined tannins and generous forest fruits at the core. Depth and breadth of fruit. The oak is currently sweet and smoky on the finish and will need time to integrate

March 2011 (Vintage 2008)

Medium red. Sexy aromas of black cherry, minerals and chocolate, lifted by hints of cranberry and pomegranate. The palate offers an attractive combination of sweet fruit, power and energy. Ultimately dominated today by its strong acid/tannin backbone and in need of several years of aging. But there's excellent potential here.

David Schildknecht, June 2010 (Vintage 2008)

An early-2010 look at base wines destined for Jadot’s village-level Nuits-St.-Georges pointed up the need for amelioration, which the eventual village bottling was destined to receive in part from an infusion of 2008 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Boudots. Most of this old vines lot, though, was destined for solo performance. It mingling of fresh blackberry and red currant; smoked meat; brown spices and black tea informs a palate of modest body and tender texture, a saline tang serving for saliva-inducement in an understated by satisfying finish. The Vosne-like, forest-floor and spice aspects of this wine emerged with additional complexity after an hour in the air. It ought to be worth following this for at least close to a decade.

William Kelley, January 2022 (Vintage 2020)

Notes of rich berry fruit, blood orange, rose petals and spices introduce the 2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots (Domaine Gagey), a medium to full-bodied, velvety and ample wine that's layered and lively, with bright acids and a saline finish. This is promising.

Neal Martin, November 2019 (Vintage 2020)

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru has a conspicuous fish scale scent on the nose that complements the black fruit. The palate is mediumbodied with fine tannins, sappy red fruit, lightly spiced with a sinewy finish that just about manages to retain an essence of finesse. This could evolve nicely in bottle.
