About this winery

A journey born millions ago and honed by 10 generations of winemakers, Clos Henri is home to extraordinary, organic Marlborough wines. Nestled in the foothills of the Wairau Valley, carved by powerful glacial and tectonic forces, the Clos Henri Estate sits upon some of the Marlborough’s most fascinating soils. Headed by members of the famous winegrowing family of Henri Bourgeois, from Sancerre, France, the Estate has been meticulously cared for since its establishment in 2000. Drawing on over...

Production notes

After the grapes are harvested, we gently press them and separate our free run from the hard pressings. The juice is fermented in stainless steel tanks to retain purity of fruits and flavour. The wine is then aged on fine yeast lees for three months, while lees stirring over this time which allows the wine to stabilise naturelly. The resulting wine is then textural, complex and round, showcasing our unique terroir.

Tasting notes

Clos Henri Estate Sauvignon Blanc offers notes of peach and nectarine are paired with elderflower and soft gunflint minerality. Textural, with zingy acidity and a flinty, mineral nuance this wine is both fresh and concentrated. Enjoy on its own as an aperitif or with fresh shellfish.

Christina Pickard, January 10 (Vintage 2023)

From a top biodynamic estate, this punches well above its price point, with none of the underripe Marlborough Sauvignon characteristics and all of the enticement of orchard blossoms and honey-drizzled citrus fruit. There's a signature stony mineral nuance at its core. The palate is harmonious with just-right acidity, lovely texture, flavor concentration and a long limey finish. Yum.

March 2024 (Vintage 2023)

Very fresh and clean with a mountain stream-like transparency. It’s light-bodied but has a density and tension as well as subtle and vivid flavors of Meyer lemons and crushed stone. Drink now. Screw cap.

James Suckling, (Vintage 2022)

A crunchy and sharp sauvignon blanc with green apples, lime zest and lemongrass on the nose. Sea shells and crushed stones, too. Clean and crisp with a mineral, dry finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink now. Screw cap

he vineyard is 5–6 km west of Renwick, 5,000 plants/ha. 80% on Riparia Gloire rootstock for low vigour, even though it was unknown to the owners, the Bourgeois family, because of their Loire background. They panicked at the idea of high vigour so went for Riparia Gloire. No SO2 while ageing. Lots of mass-selection vines. Mid straw – much deeper colour than the rest. Very savoury and 'French' on the nose! Real personality. Picked ripe and really satisfying with more mid palate than most. Relatively low acid and low pH (pH 3.05 and TA 5.9 g/l in 2015!). Long and tingly.
