About this winery

Since 1934 this Château has produced its own bottles and the Devillard family is in its 5th generation of wine growers passionate about grapes and wine. Located in Mercurey in the greater Burgundy region, the 37 hectare vineyard benefits from all the typical attributes of the region, which the Devillards combine with rigorous vinification, always waiting for the maximum maturity of the fruits before starting their work.

Product notes

The 1er Cru Clos du Roi, 3.089 hectares, is made up of 4 contiguous plots. The vines were planted in 1970 for the older ones, and 2002 for the younger ones. Slope facing South / South-West, its relief has a concave shape with more limestone ends.

Production notes

The grapes are harvested and sorted by hand, partially or 100% destemmed. Cold pre-fermentation maceration begins and continues with natural fermentation. At devatting, free-run and press wine are separated and aged separately. Aging 15 months 100% oak barrels including 25% in new barrels.

Tasting notes

Beautiful dark garnet color with purplish reflections. Intense nose of red fruits and empyreumatic with notes of sweet spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg. Very nice volume on the palate with notes of red fruits. We find notes of cinnamon and nutmeg. The tannins are very silky. Paired with peppery rib of beef, shoulder of lamb or a Tomme.

Charles Curtis, (Vintage 2020)

This wine is produced from four parcels that total 3ha on the east-facing slopes of this premier cru. After a brief cold soak, the wine is fermented using native yeasts with a high proportion of whole clusters. The fermenting wine is punched down fairly vigorously before ageing in cask for 15 months (25% new). Despite the vigorous extraction, the wine is notably silky and generous; the red and black berry fruit has a pleasant mineral cast, and the wine is notable for its freshness. Tannins are well managed, but firm at the end

RVF, January 2021 (Vintage 2018)

Clos du Roy nous offre un fruit très mûr, il évolue déjà et ses tanins, aidés par un boisé blond, ont tendance à sécher sur la finale.
