About this winery

The Abbey of La Ferté is a Mecca of Burgundian spirituality which has generated over the course of history so many religious impulses in Europe and in the world (Cluny, Citeaux, Taizé). The Abbey of La Ferté was the first daughter of Citeaux, founded in 1113. Very quickly, the monks and lay brothers developed their possessions and cultivated vines in Givry. Product notes

The vines of our 'Clos de Mortières' plot were planted in 1985. The plot faces East/South-East, the top of the plot is on clay-loamy soil as for the bottom one, which is richer in sand.

Production notes

The grapes are harvested by hand in openwork boxes, manually sorted and de-stemmed. Maceration and fermentation last 16 to 18 days with two punching downs per day during alcoholic fermentation. 100% in oak barrels including 20% in new barrels. The malolactic fermentation is carried out at 100%.

Tasting notes

Dark ruby color with purplish reflections. The nose develops notes of blackcurrant, fresh fruit and floral notes of violet. Great finesse, beautiful texture in the mouth. The tannins are fine and reminiscent of notes of fresh fruit. Pairings with pepper steak and blue cheese.

January 2022 (Vintage 2020)

The grapes are fermented in open-top fermenters and given a short elevage in cask to produce this light, elegant wine with a bright, forward pomegranate and rasberry fruit, fresh acidity, and a lively, clean texture on the palate. Ideal for drinking young on fruit. Mortières is a vineyard of nearly 1.5ha at the base of the slope. The wines are relative;y flat and the soil fairly thin.

William Kelley, 2021 (Vintage 2019)

The 2019 Givry Clos de Mortières offers up notions of spices plums and sweet berry fruit mingled with orange rind and rose petals. Medium-bodied, polished and elegant, it's a melting, charming wine from this site.

Allen Meadows, October 2020 (Vintage 2019)

There is a touch of herbal tea to the cool red berry and warm earth-suffused nose. The plush, round and seductively textured flavors possess very good energy and finishing detail, along with fine depth and length. This is really a good villages and worth your interest plus it could be enjoyed young or held for a few years first.

Allen Meadows, October 2021 (Vintage 2020)

Here too the nose is troubled by the same secondary fermentation aromas. More interesting are the more attractively textured flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the longer if similarly mildly warm finale. This is less awkward and seems more likely to harmonize with time.
