About this winery

It was with the acquisition of Beaune Premier Cru Clos des Ursules that the history of Maison Louis Jadot began in 1826. It took Louis Henry Denis Jadot thirty years to found the House in 1859, and to establish the values of this family business. By developing the wine trade in the markets of northern Europe, he was already contributing to the reputation of Burgundy wines at the time. Several generations succeeded each other at the head of the family business, but his signature on the...

Product notes

The Grands Crus of Gevrey Chambertin are located on a gentle east-facing slope in the southern part of the town. The soil is limestone in depth and clayey on the surface, which gives the wines both their power and their roundness.

Production notes

The aging lasts about 18 months in the barrels of our cooperage, of which about a third are new.

Tasting notes

Exquisite nose with well-defined bramble red fruits, underbrush and minerals, and a scent of oyster shell that intensifies with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins, slightly spicy with a smooth, consistent finish that has body and depth. Outstanding Pairings with veal chops and grilled meats

The 2020 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has an exquisite bouquet with beautifully-defined brambly red fruit, undergrowth and minerals, an oyster shell scent becoming more intense with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins, lightly spiced with a harmonious and cohesive finish that has real body and depth. Outstanding

William Kelley, 1 (Vintage 2020)

One of the more reserved wines in the range on the day of my visit was the 2020 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot), a full-bodied, concentrated and vibrant wine evocative of red berries, pomegranate, sweet spices and rose petals. Deep and tightly wound, it will reward further élevage and bottle age, as the raw materials are of obviously high quality. The 2020 vintage has turned out beautifully at this address, delivering concentrated, flavorful wines with alcohol levels between 13.3% and 13.7% and with low pHs. Winemaker Frédéric Barnier told me that efforts were made to pick earlier in the day, and that fruit waiting to be processed was kept fresh in a special cold room. In the cellar, foudres and 500-liter barrels now complement classic 228-liter pièces, a further evolution adapting to warmer, riper vintages. But aside from the quality of the 2020s and these technical developments, described in more detail in the accompanying tasting notes, there's other noteworthy news too: in 2021, Jadot entered into organic conversion for their domaine vineyards.
