Santenay Clos de Malte
2022
It was with the acquisition of Beaune Premier Cru Clos des Ursules that the history of Maison Louis Jadot began in 1826. It took Louis Henry Denis Jadot thirty years to found the House in 1859, and to establish the values of this family business. By developing the wine trade in the markets of northern Europe, he was already contributing to the reputation of Burgundy wines at the time. In the south of the Côte de Beaune, Santenay extends its vineyards over 378 ha, 124 of which produce Premiers Crus (11 climats). The soil is clay-limestone, with a more pronounced limestone resurgence in the upper part of the village, including the “Clos de Malte”. Well irrigated. Situated at the foot of Mont de Cène (Montagne des Trois Croix), in a small valley, it is perfectly exposed and protected from the winds. This 7-hectare vineyard has been entirely owned by Maison Jadot since 1993 (5.5 ha of Pinot Noir and 1.5 ha of Chardonnay).
The grapes are hand-picked in small crates to preserve the integrity of the fruit. The grapes are then carefully sorted by hand and destemmed. The grapes are macerated in open wooden or stainless steel vats for 3 to 4 weeks. The vats are pumped over twice a day during fermentation. Aging lasts around 18 months in barrels from our cooperage, about a third of which are new.
Goes well with roast salmon, roast chicken, grilled red meats: beef, lamb chop, osso bucco, stew, stew, beef bourguignon, duck, quail, partridge, teppanyaki beef, venison, wild boar, mashed potatoes with salted butter, Cîteaux, Mont d'Or.
A fresh and bright red with sliced oranges and dried strawberries, fine tannins and a savory finish.

Cask sample. Pale ruby. Quite a haunting aroma already. Well resolved and a well-balanced mouthful with a suggestion of tamarind.

A mildly toasty nose consists of distinctly earth but bright red currant and raspberry scents. The sleek, round and plump flavors possess excellent punch on the rustic and delicious lightly mineral-inflected finale that is just a bit more tightly wound.

A deft but not imperceptible dollop of wood can be found on the fresh and earthy red berry fruit aromas. There is good volume and punch to the delicious middleweight flavors that exude a refreshing salinity on the youthfully austere bitter pit fruit-inflected finish. This should be approachable young as well as be capable of repaying 4 to 8 years of keeping.
