About this winery

Maynard's is the flagship brand of Fernando and Alvaro Van Zeller's Vinihold's company. Named after the first shipper of English Port wine established in Porto, the Maynard brand pays homage to the story of the late Walter Maynard, born in 1652, an illustrious ancestor of the van Zeller family through his marriage to Dorothea Augusta Kopke, registered as one of the first merchants to export Port wine to England. Production notes

All of the base wines for this blended wood port were hand-harvested and then trodden. Vinification takes place in stainless steel vats with 1 day of pre-fermentation maceration before fermentation.

Tasting notes

This wine has a deep amber and copper hue, hazelnut aromas and vanilla notes. Smooth as silk, with flavors of honey, chocolate and caramel, balanced by refreshing acidity leading to an elegant finish. Pairings with chocolate and desserts based on dried fruits and nuts

Mark Squires, October 2016

The NV 30 Years Old Tawny Port Maynard's is a traditional blend with 111 grams per liter of residual sugar. It was bottled in 2016--in a rather odd bottle looking like a Mateus Rosé. The wine is a lot better than that, happily. This was the first release of this bottling with this presentation. A bit hard and a little harsh on the end, it evolves a bit in the glass and then shows off its best points--the amazing structure, the precision and focus. There still seemed to be just a touch of alcohol on the finish, a little too much brandy. It is dry and persistent, otherwise exceptional. In fairness to this bottling, it was only bottled the day before being seen--but since it was hand bottled just to show it to me, said Alvaro van Zeller, it was fine to present. Hence, this note.
