Product notes

The Domaine de Thalabert is the oldest Crozes Hermitage vineyard in the appellation, it joined the Paul Jaboulet Aîné domain in 1834. The vineyards of this domain are located on a plain and are among the oldest sites of the appellation. Crozes Hermitage.

Production notes

The Syrah grapes are carefully harvested by hand and fermented in stainless steel tanks. Once the fermentation is complete, this wine goes into oak barrels for 12 months, 20% of which are new.

Tasting notes

Bright ruby color. The nose releases a complex and expressive bouquet of black fruits such as blackberry, blackcurrant and blueberry with smoky notes. On the palate, power is required with density and a noble tannic structure, completed by a hint of black pepper and its graphite side. Pairings with Lamb with herbs, vegetable ratatouille and tajines.

Inky ruby. Suave, mineral-accented scents of ripe blueberry, black currant and Indian spices, along with a slowly emerging floral component. Plush, broad and deeply concentrated, displaying black and blue fruit, licorice and mocha flavors that are energized by an intense, peppery overtone. Finishes extremely long, fleshy and sweet, delivering intense mineral thrust, a subtle cracked pepper nuance and youthful, building tannins

This is very ripe with warm richness. It’s full-bodied and layered with round, chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Needs time to soften, but already opulent and attractive, in a bigger style. Try after 2023.

The 2015 Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert is a super effort, packed with savory notes of black olives and crushed stones. It's full-bodied and rich, with a hint of cedary oak, but there's plenty of fruit and ripe tannins on the lingering finish. Like some of those fine Thalabert vintages of the past, it should drink well for a couple of decades.

Shimmering ruby. Expressive, spice-accented red and dark berry aromas are complemented by suggestions of olive, espresso and candied flowers. Juicy and energetic on the palate, offering gently sweet cherry and cassis flavors that deepen through the back half. Finishes very long, spicy and smooth, with even tannins lending final grip.

James Lawther, October 2021 (Vintage 2020)

Pure and lifted with the aroma of fresh, berry fruit. Less dense than imagined but pure, fresh and juicy with extremely fine-grained tannins. Refined and almost approachable but history says it will age

The full-bodied, impressively inky 2019 Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert features blackberries and cassis, mulberries and blueberries, yet notes of violets, black olives and espresso keep it from being a one-dimensional fruit bomb. Rich, concentrated and dense, it's almost Port-like on the palate. I could see some people thinking it could be too much of a good thing, but maybe this wine just needs more élevage and additional time in the cellar compared to other recent vintages. It is a bit chunky and unformed at this point, but it finishes rich and dusty, with hints of mocha and no real signs of its 15% alcohol.
