Product notes

The small Saint-Christophe chapel is located at the top of the hill. It was built in 1235 by Chevalier Gaspard de Stérimberg after the latter, wounded during the Albigensian crusade in 1224, asked the White Queen of Castile for permission to establish her Hermitage on this hill. Roussanne and Marsanne come from clay-limestone and sandy-stony soils on steep hillsides which bring complexity and elegance.

Production notes

Manual harvest in small boxes. Pressing in whole bunches. After settling, fermentation in concrete eggs and oak barrels, 15% of which is new wood. Aging on lees in the same containers.

Tasting notes

Pale yellow color with brilliant reflections, a rich and complex nose with aromas of ripe pears, notes of pastries, honey and caramel, delicately woody. Full and warm on the palate, this wine combines power, finesse and elegance. Pairings with lobster, scallops and foie gras.

James Suckling, July 2021 (Vintage 2019)

Sliced green-apple and melon aromas with lychees and citrus fruit follow through to a medium body with plenty of fruit in the center palate and a layered, mineral finish. Light notes of almond paste. A little tight now. From organically grown grapes. Give it two or three years to come together. Try after 2023.

James Suckling, November 2021 (Vintage 2020)

Jasmine, white peaches, apricots, bananas, crushed stones, almonds and lemon pith on the nose. Shells too. It’s medium- to full-bodied with a fresh, vibrant palate. Firm and mineral. From organically grown grapes. Try from 2023.

Joe Czerwinski, May 2021 (Vintage 2019)

The 2019 Hermitage Blanc Le Chevalier de Sterimberg is just a bit flinty and smoky on the nose, then bursts with ripe pineapple and pear notes and hints of melon and white peach. Medium to full-bodied, it's almost crystalline in its fruit purity and dimension, with clean edges and ample length capped by an attractive hint of bitterness on the lingering finish. As usual, this is roughly two-thirds Marsanne and one-third Roussanne.

James Lawther, October 2021 (Vintage 2020)

Evident ripeness on the nose with subtle pear and confit fruit notes. Palate more vibrant, the acidity clearly present but a purity of fruit all the same. Powerful and persistent finish, the rapier edge of acidity driving the wine along. (JL)
