In 1757, vines were already planted in Romaneira, a name inspired by the abundance of rosemary in this magnificent and warm region bordering the Douro. A wine from the estate was auctioned off by the famous Christie's house in 1872, an indication of the status that the name Romaneira had acquired over the years! In 1942, Arnaldo Monteiro de Barros bought Romaneira and joined several Quintas, or "farms", neighboring the estate. As a result, Romaneira grew into a huge property by regional standards, and was purchased in 2004 by Christian Seely, who turned his dream into reality by bringing together a group of investors to acquire the estate. A deep renovation of the vineyard and winemaking facilities was then undertaken. The vineyards overlook the majestic Douro River, in a vast natural amphitheater of terraces of vines, cut into the schist rock. Romaneira is one of the largest estates in the region, with a total of 412 hectares and 3 kilometers of riverfront, covering several microclimates. Distinctive characteristic of Quinta da Romaneira, all its wines are made exclusively from the grapes of the vineyard, whether it is Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinto Cão, or also its small proportion of white grapes, or even its few hectares of exotic grape varieties such as Syrah and Petit Verdot. Most of the Douro wineries date back to their origins in the 18th, sometimes even the 17th century, which makes them quaint, but not always very practical. Romaneira dug a large hole in the ground to build the ideal cellar, with stainless steel winemaking equipment, which also means the ability to control temperatures to be able to fully express the personality of the vineyard. Quinta da Romaneira will celebrate its 260 years in 2017. Today, the owners share the same passion for the Douro and the same dream for the Quinta, while Romaneira is living today the best moment in its history.
