About this winery

Just an hour's drive from Vienna, Weingut Malat's reputation is built on three centuries of viticulture. A pioneer in the Kremstal region, this winery is one of the most respected in Austria. Since 2010, Michael Malat has been at the helm of the family estate, which dates back to 1722. The 45 hectares of vineyards lie on primary rock and loess soils. Product notes

About the Vineyard: Gottschelle is the only vineyard south of the Danube composed of massive loess layers. Each of these layers bears witness to a new ice age. In Gottschelle, there is also a layer of gravel from the ancient Danube River, which imparts a unique minerality to the wines produced here: highly mineral, with plenty of fruity roundness and hints of exotic aromas. The site was first mentioned in 1341 under the name "Gotschalich," a term derived from the word "Götsche," referring to a steep escarpment.

Production notes

handpicked selected grapes, 100% clean fruit without botrytis , soft pressing, spontaneous fermentation with the natural yeast (without any cultivated yeast) in 2.500 litre wodden barrls, staying on the lees for at least 6 month

Tasting notes

bright gold green, very welcoming nose, elegant, complex and concentrated, very well balanced. Creamed meat and fish pairings

Peter Moser, March 2023 (Vintage 2021)

Medium yellow, green hints, silver reflections. On the nose, subtle tropical fruit notes, hints of clementine, pineapple and meadow herbs with a floral touch. Juicy on the palate with good complexity, lively acidic structure, mineral-salty notes and white stone fruit on the long finish. Definite ageing potential.

Aleks Zecevic, September 2024 (Vintage 2021)

This is built into a classical frame, with laser-like focus to the fresh, crunchy green apple, peach and pear flavors. The powerful white pepper and mineral-filled midpalate emerges adding to the complexity. The finish features plenty sea salt accents.

Tara Thomas, November 2024 (Vintage 2022)

This is spicy, cedary, and very, very pretty, with lots of pink peppercorn and pink-grapefruit zestiness and pretty floral notes. All of this lasts on a base of pure stone, firm and savoury, lasting with a creamy, peachy glow.
