About this winery

Since 1934 this Château has produced its own bottles and the Devillard family is in its 5th generation of wine growers passionate about grapes and wine. Located in Mercurey in the greater Burgundy region, the 37 hectare vineyard benefits from all the typical attributes of the region, which the Devillards combine with rigorous vinification, always waiting for the maximum maturity of the fruits before starting their work.

Product notes

The Mission is a parcel held in monopoly. The vines were planted in 1961 for the oldest and in 1997 for the youngest. East exposure on a rocky and limestone terrace located just above the Premier Cru “Clos du Roi”.

Production notes

The grapes are harvested by hand, sorted, fully pressed. The juice is settled after pressing for 12 to 24 hours at controlled temperature. The alcoholic and malolactic fermentations are carried out in oak barrels. After fermentation, aging is completed after 14 months. It is made 50% in 400-liter oak barrels and 50% in 228-liter oak barrels, 25% of which are new barrels, then for 3 months in stainless steel vats.

Tasting notes

Beautiful golden color with pretty shiny reflections. The nose is intense and expressive. The wine develops mineral notes but also fruity (lychee, pineapple) and floral (bergamot) notes. The wine presents a perfect balance between acidity and roundness. Beautiful aromatic persistence. Pair with seafood, lobster and cheese risotto.

The 2019 Mercurey 1er Cru La Mission Blanc is a particular success, exhibiting aromas of peach, orange blossom, citrus oil and fresh bread, followed by a medium to fully-bdoeid, satiny and precise palate that's seamless and penetrating.

The 2018 Mercurey 1er Cru La Mission Blanc is also attractive, delivering notes of pear, orange oil, green apple and pastry cream. Medium bodied, mineral and lively, it isn't as concentrated as the fine 2017 rendition, but it makes up for that with immediacy and charm.

January 2021 (Vintage 2018)

The lush, viscous texture sets the stage for peach, lemon pie and citronella flavors, wrapped in a bow of baking spices. Fresh and refined, shows a lingering aftertaste of toasty oak. Drink now through 2024

William Kelley, July 2018 (Vintage 2016)

Notes of citrus zest, jasmine, pastry cream and fresh apples precede the 2016 Mercurey 1er Cru La Mission Blanc, an elegantly textural, medium-bodied white with excellent cut, concentration and grip. It's a lovely example of white Mercurey that is appreciably superior to the somewhat overripe 2015 version.

Allen Meadows, October 2022 (Vintage 2021)

More subtle wood influence is present on the overtly exotic aromas of passion fruit, lychee and dried apricot. The very seductive, even lavishly rich, medium-bodied flavors possess good power on the dry and citrusy if slightly edgy finish. This may well round out but today it's a bit awkward.

Allen Meadows, October 2020 (Vintage 2019)

This is aromatically similar to the En Pierrelet but with a bit more layering. The succulent, plump and seductively textured flavors possess a rounded mid-palate along with evident minerality on the focused and more intense finale that is well-balanced and persistent. This too could be enjoyed young.
