About this winery

The culture of the vine has been practiced in Alsace for more than 2000 years. We find traces of the first Hugels in Alsace as early as the 15th century, and some two centuries later, Hans Ulrich Hugel settled in Riquewihr in 1639 and took the head of the powerful Corporation des Vignerons. Product notes

Grossi Laüe means "Great Terroirs" in the Alsatian dialect; they are the equivalent of Grosses Gewächs in Germany or Grands Crus in Burgundy. Made from our three best parcels in Pflostig, a very calcareous terroir that imparts finesse and minerality with depth, smoothness, and excellent aging potential.

Production notes

Gravity-fed presses, without pumping or other handling. No malolactic fermentation or lees stirring. A single racking before winter, during which the wine clarifies naturally without artificial cold treatment. Gentle filtration, respectful of the wine, before bottling in the spring, followed by bottle aging in our cellars until release.

Tasting notes

Aromas of pear, mirabelle plum, apricot, acacia blossom, wildflower honey, licorice, and hints of peppermint, vanilla, and nutmeg. Round, appealing, juicy, and aromatic. Pairs well with terrines, risotto, and fish.

James Suckling, June 2022 (Vintage 2014)

What a beautiful nose of papaya and floral honey this pinot gris has! Rich and elegant, with a much drier balance than the great majority of high-end Alsace wines from this grape. The succulent cooked-peach flavor lingers long at the finish. A cuvee of wines from the Pflostig and Grand Cru Sporen sites. Drink or hold.
