About this winery

The culture of the vine has been practiced in Alsace for more than 2000 years. We find traces of the first Hugels in Alsace as early as the 15th century, and some two centuries later, Hans Ulrich Hugel settled in Riquewihr in 1639 and took the head of the powerful Corporation des Vignerons. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Hugels were recognized as great winegrowers. In 1902, Frédéric Emile Hugel left the old family property to settle in the center of Riquewihr, where the heart of the...

Product notes

Made from overripe grapes from a selection of the oldest plots of the Hugel estate of the Schoenenbourg grand cru.

Production notes

The grapes are transported to the presses, by gravity, without pumping or other mechanical intervention. After pressing, the must is decanted, then fermented in barrels or temperature-controlled vats. The wine is racked once. In the spring, the wine is filtered before bottling which ages for a long time in the cellars.

Tasting notes

Soft and harmonious with a pleasant touch of freshness. White peach, grapefruit, cardamom, bergamot, hawthorn, gooseberry and Sichuan pepper. The palate is captivated by its persistence in the mouth, clear, transparent and refined. Pairings with foie gras, blue cheese and desserts.

March 2023 (Vintage 2013)

From the Schoenenbourg and a small plot in the Engelsreben (both located in Riquewihr), the 2013 Riesling Vendange Tardive has a golden-yellow color and offers an intense but also coolish and spicy bouquet with notes of stewed apples, crushed stones and fine botrytis. Bottled with 11.2% alcohol plus 68 grams per liter of residual sugar, this is the richest VT Riesling Hugel has ever bottled. The wine is nevertheless very elegant, refined and persistently mineral due to its uplifting salinity and lemon bitters. Greatly balanced, this is a classic that will improve over decades. Tasted at the domaine in April 2022.

Ian d'Agata, September 2018 (Vintage 2013)

Bright straw. The inviting nose offers apple, lime, vanilla and clove aromas, not to mention a wallop of smoky botrytis. Then tactile and gently textured, the flavors of lemon peel, apple and lime lifted by strong notes of flowers and grapefruit. Finishes long, sweet and harmonious (68 g/L r.s. and 5.5 g/L total acidity). About 6,000 bottles of this beauty were made; it’s a real Vendanges Tardives made with grapes harvested November 5-10 and mostly hit by noble rot (roughly 90% of the grapes were affected by Botrytis cinerea).
