About this winery

The culture of the vine has been practiced in Alsace for more than 2000 years. We find traces of the first Hugels in Alsace as early as the 15th century, and some two centuries later, Hans Ulrich Hugel settled in Riquewihr in 1639 and took the head of the powerful Corporation des Vignerons. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Hugels were recognized as great winegrowers. In 1902, Frédéric Emile Hugel left the old family property to settle in the center of Riquewihr, where the heart of the...

Product notes

Plot selection from the Hugel Family estate located in Riquewihr in the most prestigious crus. The marls of Riquewihr give this Riesling a minerality characteristic of these great terroirs.

Production notes

Presses fed by gravity, without pumping or other manipulation. A single racking before winter where the wine clarifies naturally without artificial cold treatment. Light gentle filtration before bottling in the spring and then aging in bottles in our cellars.

Tasting notes

Straw yellow, lemon color with lots of light green reflections. Beautiful harmony between the fruity aromas and an excellent minerality despite the youth. Spring flower, granny smith apple, white peach, lily and acacia flower. Racy and noble in harmony with its marly soil which brings it generosity, flesh and a nice hold with a nice finish on the full and persistent finish. Pairings with lobster, veal blanquette and pork chop.

James Suckling, July 2024 (Vintage 2020)

Time has polished this excellent dry riesling to a wonderful harmony of richness, a wide spectrum of candied fruit, and dried sage and tarragon complexity. Plenty of structure, but the wine is creamy and silky in the very long finish. A cuvee of sites, more than 70% of which is from the Grand Cru Schoenenbourg with mixed vine age. Drink or hold.

Stephan Reinhardt, February 2025 (Vintage 2020)

The 2020 Riesling Estate is from marly soils around Riquewihr, including the upper part of the grand cru Schoenenbourg. The nose is discreet yet complex and layered with flinty and earthy aromas as well as yellow paprika notes. Very elegant and refined on the palate, this is an intense, saline and structural Riesling with fine tannins, lots of salt and a serious, maybe even somewhat austere personality. The 2020 surely has an excellent aging capacity and will further improve in the bottle. 14% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024.

Anne Krebiehl, January 2024 (Vintage 2020)

The 2020 Riesling Estate was picked across marl sites in Riquewihr, mainly the declassied grapes from the
Schoenenbourg Grand Cru, especially the young vines. It opens with a serene lift of dried chamomile and
dried lemon peel. With an exquisite and subtle phenolic frame, the palate also channels these herbal and
citrus notions. Still, it smooths them with an incipient, balm-like mouthfeel on a linear yet limestone-buered
body. This is streamlined, aromatic and lifted, and will only increase with age. It says Alsace with the rst
whi and will be emblematic of a bone-dry, balanced and understated Riesling. (Bone-Dry)
