About this winery

It was with the acquisition of Beaune Premier Cru Clos des Ursules that the history of Maison Louis Jadot began in 1826. It took Louis Henry Denis Jadot thirty years to found the House in 1859, and to establish the values of this family business. By developing the wine trade in the markets of northern Europe, he was already contributing to the reputation of Burgundy wines at the time. Product notes

The town of Vougeot is located in the center of the Côte de Nuits, between Chambolle in the North and Vosne Romanée in the South. Maison Louis Jadot is the second owner out of the 88 in this Clos with approximately 2.5 hectares of vines out of a total of 50 hectares. The soil is limestone, more or less clayey and contains an abundance of stones useful for the drainage of the vines. The vineyard faces due east.

Production notes

Aging lasts about 18 months in our cooperage's barrels, about a third of which are new.

Tasting notes

The dress of Clos Vougeot is very deep. On the nose, it presents an exceptional aromatic intensity in which concentrated aromas of red fruits (cherry, blackberries), coffee and liquorice mingle. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and fleshy with well-marked tannins and balanced acidity. This wine offers body and structure with a good length in the mouth. Pairings with lamb chops and game.

Bruce Sanderson, January 2019 (Vintage 2016)

Rose, cherry and spice aromas introduce this light-bodied, saturated version. The flavors add wild strawberry, incense and kirsch notes, while remaining persistent on the kaleidoscopic finish. Feels tense now, yet should develop nicely over time. A mineral element lingers. Best from 2023 through 2045. 900 cases made

Roger Voss, January 2019 (Vintage 2016)

Jadot is one of about 80 owners of tiny parcels in this walled, five-acre vineyard. This wine is as much about rich, generous opulence as about structure. An ethereal fragrance moves into the powerful black fruits and velvet tannins. The wine will develop slowly and surely, ready to drink from 2027.

William Kelley, January 2019 (Vintage 2016)

The 2016 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) is showing well from bottle, unwinding in the glass with a youthfully primary bouquet of ripe cherries, red berries, candied peel and cassis that's subtly framed by some nicely integrated new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and satiny textured, its broad-shouldered chassis of impressively fine-grained tannin cloaked in a succulent, even tangy core of vibrant fruit, concluding with a long and nicely defined finish. While the structure is sufficiently refined that drinking a glass now isn't a brutalizing experience, a decade of patience is recommended.
