Product notes

The Volnay vineyard, between Pommard in the North and Meursault in the South. The commune of Volnay only produces red wines. There is no Grand Cru but 26 Premiers Crus, composed of limestone marls from Aargau and in the part bordering Pommard and Meursault, on clay-limestone boulders from the Bathonian. There is also a lot of calcium. "Les Santenots" rest on a limestone soil of red earth.

Production notes

The harvest is manual in small crates in order to preserve the integrity of the fruit. The grapes are macerated in open wooden or stainless steel vats for 3 to 4 weeks. The vats are punched twice a day during fermentation. Aging lasts about 18 months in barrels, about a third of which are new.

Tasting notes

Volnay is renowned for the elegance of its red wines ... bright red in color, the aromas of red and black berries associated with spices and a delicate woody note. These gourmet flavors are enveloped by fine tannins that offer the palate a velvety caress. Pairing with turkey with cranberries and quail with berries.

Allen Meadows, April 2018 (Vintage 2016)

Strong wood influence all but overshadows the spicy black pinot, plum and spice aromas. The medium-bodied flavors are rich to point of being velvety yet there is no lack of power or punch to the firm and moderately robust finish where the only nit is a touch of warmth. Note that this will require at least some patience.
