About this winery

Founded in 1879 by the brothers Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asua, the Compañia Vinicola del Norte de España is one of the oldest estates in La Rioja. C.V.N.E. is located in Haro, in the traditional wine trade district, next to the train station. In this period when transport was not very advanced, there was a definite advantage in locating your cellar very close to a train station! By 1900, this company had more than 80,000 bottles intended for prolonged aging, which was rare at that time...

Product notes

The Virgen del Galir winery was founded in 2002 in a valley of the Galir river, in Éntoma, a small village of Ourense, in Galicia, in the north of Spain. The semi-forgotten region of Valdeorras DO has extraordinary vineyards. La Virgen del Galir has 20 hectares of vines on almost as many plots, in a valley of the River Galir. The altitude is over 600 m. The ground is almost entirely made up of schist and slate decomposed into terraces.

Production notes

Manual harvest in 15 kg crates. Cold maceration of the grapes in refrigerators. Aging for 4 months on fine lees in stainless steel vats.

Tasting notes

Bright yellow in color. Aromas of white fruits and citrus, floral notes and mineral touches. In the mouth, it is fresh, lively, vibrant and silky. Pleasant and persistent finish. Agreements with seafood, vegetarian dishes and white meats.

James Suckling, September 2023 (Vintage 2022)

A lightly mineral expression of godello showing some crab apples with subtle grilled herbs and crushed stones. Fresh and medium-bodied on the palate with a saline twist in the middle. Flavorful finish, but pure and elegant. Drink now.

Luis Gutiérrez, June 2020 (Vintage 2019)

The single-vineyard 2019 Pagos del Galir A Malosa Godello comes from a vineyard of 21 hectares planted over four years after purchasing 10 separate plots. Such a large vineyard has diverse soils—schist, slate, silt and clay—with altitudes ranging between 400 and 600 meters. This 2019 comes from the lower terraces, rich in slate and planted first, four hectares from 2015. It fermented in a 7,000-liter stainless steel vat, a 2,000-liter oak vat and two 600-liter clay amphorae (tinajas) with indigenous yeasts, and it matured with lees for six months, except the part in stainless steel that was transferred to used 500-liter oak barrels. This has a less reductive profile, having been fermented and matured in different containers (not only stainless steel, as is the case of the Maruxa), and it also comes from more schistous soils and has a more herbal and floral touch, even a bit of fennel. It's tastier and more expressive and has a dusty/mineral sensation in the texture. These whites come from a vintage with power and freshness, a year with high potential where the whites are going to age nicely. This is the first vintage for this bottling. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2020.

Josh Raynolds, June 2021 (Vintage 2020)

Light, vivid yellow. Fresh, mineral-tinged citrus and orchard fruits and a powerful floral quality on the perfumed nose. Juicy and focused on the palate, offering lively Meyer lemon, pear and honeysuckle flavors that deepen through the back half. A dusty mineral flourish adds firm cut to the persistent finish, which features clinging citrus fruit and floral notes.
