Founded in 1879 by the brothers Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asua, the Compañia Vinicola del Norte de España is one of the oldest estates in La Rioja. C.V.N.E. is located in Haro, in the traditional wine trade district, next to the train station. In this period when transport was not very advanced, there was a definite advantage in locating your cellar very close to a train station! By 1900, this company had more than 80,000 bottles intended for prolonged aging, which was rare at that time when producers sold their wines as soon as they were bottled. The company is recognized for many of its innovations, including pasteurization by the Malvoisin system, and it was also the first to build a large concrete vat for fermentation, affectionately known as “El Carmen”. In 1980, C.V.N.E. had a modern cellar built with stainless steel tanks to produce modern-style Riojas, that is, younger and fruity wines. The 545 hectares cultivated by C.V.N.E. account for 50% of its total production bringing together several vineyards from the Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa regions, mainly clay-limestone terroirs under the maritime climatic influence of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Its Cune range, one of the original products, its famous Imperial produced since the 1920s, and the latest addition Vina Real all stand for quality, at always very competitive prices. Note all the historical charge of the Contino estate, joined to C.V.N.E. since 1973, which ages its wines in very old cellars dating from the 16th century. Still owned by the Asua family, the estate now has 22 buildings, including the original constructions from 1879, and produces excellent red and white wines, their Rioja being one of the few still very woody whites on the market. Since 1997, the C.V.N.E. is listed on the Madrid Stock Exchange, which shows the importance this company has assumed.
