About this winery

Founded in 1879 by the brothers Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asua, the Compañia Vinicola del Norte de España is one of the oldest estates in La Rioja. C.V.N.E. is located in Haro, in the traditional wine trade district, next to the train station. In this period when transport was not very advanced, there was a definite advantage in locating your cellar very close to a train station! By 1900, this company had more than 80,000 bottles intended for prolonged aging, which was rare at that time...

Product notes

The grapes come from our own 40 year old vines from a small 2 hectare plot called La Virgen, in the area known as San Cristóbal, in the village of Labastida, Rioja Alavesa.

Production notes

Fermentation of delicately crushed grapes with native yeasts in small vats. Aged 12 months in oak barrels.

Tasting notes

Deep garnet color with purple reflections. The nose is very intense with a wide aromatic palette. The entry in the mouth is soft with a tannin which balances perfectly with the sweetness of the wine as well as a touch of acidity which gives it freshness and length. Pairing with grilled meats on the BBQ.

James Suckling, September 2023 (Vintage 2020)

The density of fruit is impressive in this new rendition from the village of Labastida. Lots of currants, cherries and orange peel. Crushed-stone and limestone character. Full and chewy with fine tannins. But long and intense and very structured. Needs three to four years to soften. Try after 2026.

Alison Napjus, October 2023 (Vintage 2020)

A silky, seamless red, with enticing flavors of pureed black raspberry, ripe plum and mandarin orange peel gliding across the palate and wrapped around sculpted tannins. Lively and focused, with the fruit profile accented by notes of dried flowers and herbs, coffee, mineral and earth that linger on the firm finish. Drink now through 2033. 250 cases made, 50 cases imported.
