About this winery

Founded in 1879 by the brothers Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asua, the Compañia Vinicola del Norte de España is one of the oldest estates in La Rioja. C.V.N.E. is located in Haro, in the traditional wine trade district, next to the train station. In this period when transport was not very advanced, there was a definite advantage in locating your cellar very close to a train station! By 1900, this company had more than 80,000 bottles intended for prolonged aging, which was rare at that time...

Production notes

Sourced from their best plots in Rioja Alavesa. Aged for a minimum of 24 months in French and American oak barrels and a further 3 years in the bottle.

Tasting notes

Elegant nose with notes of spices and fine wood with a touch of ripe fruit and liquorice. Great structure and volume on the palate and well-balanced with the acidity and polished noble tannins.

James Suckling, September 2021 (Vintage 2015)

Fantastic aromas of cappuccino and orange with dark berries. Full-bodied with ultra-fine tannins that are layered and wonderfully polished. The wine has wonderful depth and complexity, as well as super structure. Great Viña Real. Drinkable now, but better in two or three years. Will age beautifully.

James Suckling, 2022 (Vintage 2016)

Attractive nose of dark cherries, dill, thyme, coconut and chocolate. Some salted caramel, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, silky tannins and vibrant acidity. So balanced and fresh with a long, refined finish. 95% tempranillo and 5% graciano. Better from 2024.

Zekun Shuai, August 2023 (Vintage 2017)

Complex and pretty profound nose with tapenade, savory mussels, dark mineral and a fine twist of spiciness and piquancy to the dark cherries here. Just a hint of vanilla. Medium- to full-bodied on the palate, showing excellent intensity, juiciness and firmness. Long, ripe and really balanced. Drink or hold.

Josh Raynolds, April 2021 (Vintage 2015)

Glass-staining ruby. A highly complex bouquet features ripe red berry, cherry liqueur, cured tobacco and mocha scents, and a smoky mineral nuance and a hint of white pepper add urgency. Sweet, mineral-driven blackberry, cherry-vanilla, chewing tobacco and candied rose flavors show impressive depth as well as energy. Blends power and finesse with a steady hand and finishes chewy, sweet and impressively long, with youthfully gripping tannins adding framework.

Alison Napjus, October 2023 (Vintage 2017)

Firm and well-knit, with flavors of baked black raspberry and plum, fresh earth and pretty accents of violet and licorice enmeshed with sculpted tannins. Long and firm on the spiced finish. Tempranillo and Graciano. Drink now through 2030. 2,500 cases made, 600 cases imported.

GS, September 2021 (Vintage 2015)

Tobacco-laced flavors of cherry and currant are cast with anise, dried orange peel and herb notes that are supported by integrated tannins. Details of clove and mineral combine on the lingering finish. Drink now through 2032.
