About this winery

The culture of the vine has been practiced in Alsace for more than 2000 years. We find traces of the first Hugels in Alsace as early as the 15th century, and some two centuries later, Hans Ulrich Hugel settled in Riquewihr in 1639 and took the head of the powerful Corporation des Vignerons. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Hugels were recognized as great winegrowers. Product notes

With Schoelhammer 2010, we are taking up an old Alsatian tradition which wanted great local wines to bear exclusively the name of the locality from which they come.

Production notes

Press fed by gravity, without pumping or other manipulation. After static settling for a few hours, the musts are transferred to tuns or vats where fermentation will take place with temperature control (around 18°). A single racking before winter where the wine clarifies naturally without artificial cold treatment. Light filtration respectful of the wine before bottling in the spring then aging in bottles in our cellars until it is put on sale.

Tasting notes

If the perfect vintage does not exist, it must all the same be very close to 2010. While its richness and its power recall the profile of a solar year, a remarkable tension brings a sovereign balance to the whole. A bottle now in full first phase of opening but with the expected longevity as one of the most beautiful of the century Pairings with lobster, noble fish and veal.

James Suckling, June 2021 (Vintage 2010)

One of the world’s unique dry whites! This is so deep and spicy with a ton of candied citrus. Stunning concentration, power and structure on the palate, but also the characteristic vibrancy of the vintage. Keeps expanding in the glass and revealing more of its dark, earthy magic! Decades of aging potential. Drink or hold.
