About this winery

It was with the acquisition of Beaune Premier Cru Clos des Ursules that the history of Maison Louis Jadot began in 1826. It took Louis Henry Denis Jadot thirty years to found the House in 1859, and to establish the values of this family business. By developing the wine trade in the markets of northern Europe, he was already contributing to the reputation of Burgundy wines at the time. Several generations succeeded each other at the head of the family business, but his signature on the...

Product notes

Above the Great Saint George there is a climate of great force. The soils of the Premiers Crus are mainly composed of limestone and marl, and their perfect exposure to the East allows them to produce superb wines.

Production notes

Aging lasts around 18 months in barrels from our cooperage, around a third of which are new.

Tasting notes

Lovely nose of black cherry, violet and spices is not only expressive, but also fragrant. The palate is also somewhat surprising, because its texture is magnificent and relatively supple, but its firm, powerful and imposing finish reminds us that this is indeed a Vaucrains. Pairings with lamb chops.

Classic Nuits. Very juicy and substantial. Real drive here. Well judged. Savoury. Long and subtle.

January 2014 (Vintage 2012)

The 2012 Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains is striking. Hard candy, plums, licorice and sweet spices all meld together in the Vaucrains. Even with all of its richness, the 2012 is showing beautifully today, largery because the vintage has softened some of the contours, resulting in an unusually generous, inviting young Vaucrains. At the same time, there is a plenty of depth to reward cellaring. Rose petals, sweet red berries and cinnamon all inform the silky, perfumed finish.

Allen Meadows, April 2014 (Vintage 2012)

Barnier indicated that this was not vinified by Jadot. Here the nose is compositionally similar to Perrières though the menthol character is less pronounced plus there is a note of cassis. There is excellent volume to the overtly powerful and muscular flavors that possess a seductive mouth feel before culminating in a mildly warm and rustic finish that is presently not particularly well-balanced. This could very well come together but today it is decidedly awkward.

Pale bright crimson. Smudgy and scented. Lots of bright edgy fruit. Very youthful. Pretty tough for the moment. Uncompromising. (JR)

Allen Meodows, April 2015 (Vintage 2013)

Tasting note: Plentiful wood and menthol scents serves as a less than subtle backdrop for the ripe and very fresh red and dark currant, sauvage and strong earth aromas. There is excellent richness to the full-bodied and overtly muscular flavors that possess fine power on the firm and palate coating finish. The somewhat rustic tannins are buffered by the abundant dry extract and the overall impression of this bold effort is one of a classic, indeed even old school, Vaucrains.

Allen Meadows, April 2018 (Vintage 2016)

Here too the wood treatment is sufficiently strong to largely obliterate the underlying fruit though notes of earth and the sauvage do survive the onslaught of oak. Otherwise the imposingly-scaled flavors possess outstanding power, intensity and muscle before concluding in a strikingly long, palate coating and distinctly rustic finale. While this won't win any awards for refinement, it is textbook Vaucrains.

Stephen Tanzer, January 2018 (Vintage 2016)

(this vineyard was affected by frost, but Jadot has three different sources of fruit): Bright, dark red. Aromas of dark cherry, raspberry and menthol are complicated by a sexy musky quality. Boasts lovely mineral energy and definition in the mouth, as well as excellent depth of flavor and restrained sweetness. Seems higher in acidity than most of the Jadot '16s from the Côte de Beaune but also more complex. Finishes firm, even a bit muscular, but not hard, with serious ripe tannins. (There's no Les Saint-Georges or Les Cailles in 2016 as Jadot couldn't get the fruit.)
