The 2020 Pouilly-Fuissé Le Clos 1er Cru which comes from the walled vineyard, the only officially-recognised Premier Cru monopole of 2.68ha, the vines eastfacing on three soils - clay at the bottom, marl in the middle and limestone at the top. It was picked on 30 August. The nose is quite reticent at first, so leaving the wine in my glass for 10 minutes, it really opens and shows its complexity thanks to the mélange of soils, honeysuckle and dried honey, lime and faint hints of liquorice. The palate is very well balanced with good depth, real weight and presence here, texturally-satisfying with impressive persistence on the finish. Excellent, but wise owls will cellar this for several years before broaching

A rather puzzling judgement call, I thought, to show the Demi-Sec after the Brut NV and before the Ultra Brut. I'm not sure it helped the Demi-Sec or the Ultra Brut. 45% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir, 15% Pinot Meunier. RS 40 g/l. A fraction more colour than La Cuvée. Smells of warm crème anglaise, brioche and peaches. Not awfully sweet tasting, considering all that residual sugar. Loosely woven. Biscuits and nectarines and late-harvest apples. Very appley and easy. But I'm not sure this is sweet enough for dessert. Possibly with fresh strawberries and a spoonful of mascarpone?

Dark-colored, this rich, full-bodied wine is flavored with dry molasses as well as raisins. Cut with acidity, it has a mature feel that is both ripe and, at the end, dry, with a fragrant aftertaste.
