About this winery

In 1995 Alberto Antonini, a well-known Tuscan winemaker, and Antonio Morescalchi, a young entrepreneur, took a trip to visit the burgeoning wine areas of South America. It only took one stop to find what they were looking for. They were immediately impressed by the vineyards thriving in the high altitude and dry climate of Mendoza, and were captivated by the whispered traditions and blend of cultures. They returned to Tuscany powerfully impressed not only by the region, but also by the...

Product notes

100% Malbec grapes from plots 7, 9, 11 and 12 of our Jardín de Hormigas vineyard, located in Paraje Altamira (Uco Valley), 1200 meters above sea level. The entire vineyard is certified organic, with sustainable management and a focus on biodiversity, where – following Alan York’s philosophy – the grapes are not the product of a plant but of an ecosystem.

Production notes

Minimum extraction of 1/3 volume per day with small pump-overs. Vinified in concrete vats without epoxy, with native yeasts and 15% whole bunch. The temperature throughout the process was 25º C. Total maceration of 20 days. The aging was carried out specifically for 12 months.

Tasting notes

"Meteora" is an object fallen from the sky, a meteorite that fell upon us unexpectedly. This wine was born from the idea of simply expressing the incredible complexity of the Jardín de Hormigas vineyard. Very naive on our part, we obtained a Malbec with a unique, complex, and diverse character. Its light ruby red color is enhanced by subtle purple reflections. The nose, slightly reductive, reveals notes of gunpowder and graphite. Fruity notes of cherry and morello cherry mingle with floral and herbaceous notes: violet, chamomile, and native vegetation from the foothills of Mendoza. The palate is taut and electric. Its tannins are elastic, textured, balanced, but with character. Hints of chalk are perceived from the start, giving way to notes of cherry and violet on the finish. The path on the palate is vertical and concentrated, with a long finish.

Matthew Luczy, May 2025 (Vintage 2021)

The 2021 Jardín de Hormigas Meteora leads with a crystalline, detailed and increasingly complex nose centering around blackberries, violets, lavender and graphite aromas. The palate exudes the seamless, weightless intensity that defines the range, beautifully balancing density and levity with an elegantly taught core. It finishes with a juicy, tense and focused finish that combines pleasing saturation with spry energy and mineral-laced nuances. With aeration, this wine continuously adds layers, depth and aromatic lift, making for an effortless and finessed expression of Paraje Altamira.

James Suckling, February 2024 (Vintage 2021)

This is a new wine from a single parcel with spicy mineral, white pepper, blackberry and bark notes. Medium-bodied with firm, open, crunchy tannins that are fine grained. Made and aged in concrete. No wood. Drink now.

Joaquín Hidalgo, June 2023 (Vintage 2021)

The 2021 Malbec Jardin de Hormigas Meteora originates from Paraje Altamira and was aged for 12 months in concrete vessels. Purple in hue. The subtle, nuanced nose features violet, sage and fennel notes alongside plum and blackberry. It has a dry, lean, chalky texture with an athletic, focused prole in which the energy and mouthfeel enhance the light-footed character. The 2021 is a modern, beautifully sculpted red.
