About this winery

The culture of the vine has been practiced in Alsace for more than 2000 years. We find traces of the first Hugels in Alsace as early as the 15th century, and some two centuries later, Hans Ulrich Hugel settled in Riquewihr in 1639 and took the head of the powerful Corporation des Vignerons. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Hugels were recognized as great winegrowers. In 1902, Frédéric Emile Hugel left the old family property to settle in the center of Riquewihr, where the heart of the...

Product notes

Grossi Laüe means Grands Terroirs in Alsatian dialect, they are the equivalent of Grosses Gewächs in Germany or Grands Crus of Burgundy. The heart of this Pinot Noir comes from a vineyard planted in 1966 in our family estate on the Pflostig hillside.

Production notes

The grapes are destemmed and macerated for approximately 2 weeks, with manual immersion of the cap (pigeage) to guarantee the best possible extraction. The wine is aged for almost 10 months in small oak vats that are partially renewed each year.

Tasting notes

Vibrant ruby red. Notes of menthol, flint, sweet spices, herbs and flavors of red fruits (red cherry, raspberry). The finish is long and young, mellow, but with a very good persistent scent of red fruits. Pairings with duck and sweetbreads.

James Suckling, June 2022 (Vintage 2014)

Spicy, dried-sage and coffee-bean nose with delicate red-fruit aromas and a touch of orange zest. Medium-bodied with the structure to age, but the healthy tannins are now well integrated. The fresh and mineral finish is longer and more harmonious than I thought possible in this challenging vintage. From the Pflostig site. Drink or hold.

Ian d'Agata, August 2016 (Vintage 2014)

Bright red. Smoky dark berries and herbs on the enticing nose. Enters bright and fruity, then austere and tight in the middle, but shows lovely depth to the red cherry and dark plum flavors. Finishes long and with delicate reminders of red fruit. More depth and more elegance than the Pinot Noir Classic.

Quite lactic at first. Pursed, prissy, sour cherry and rosehip. Lots of red-sour notes with some cedar and sandalwood lined with beautiful, leanly muscled tannins. Super-fresh into the white pepper finish. An argument for how well Alsace Pinot can age.
