About this winery

Since 1934 this Château has produced its own bottles and the Devillard family is in its 5th generation of wine growers passionate about grapes and wine. Located in Mercurey in the greater Burgundy region, the 37 hectare vineyard benefits from all the typical attributes of the region, which the Devillards combine with rigorous vinification, always waiting for the maximum maturity of the fruits before starting their work.

Product notes

A plot (1,521 hectares) in Sazenay, with an average age of the vines of 18 years. The soil is very exposed to erosion, very rich in limestone. The upper part of the hill is extremely stony, while the lower part is richer in fine elements.

Production notes

The grapes are harvested by hand, sorted by hand and 100% destemmed. Aging for 15 months in 100% oak barrels including 25% in new barrels.

Tasting notes

Beautiful ruby color with purplish reflections. The wine develops notes of blueberry, blackberry, with smoky and pepper notes. The wine is rich, ample, with a good tannic structure. There are notes of spices (pepper, liquorice). Pairing with a leg of lamb.

William Kelley, July 2021 (Vintage 2019)

The 2019 Mercurey 1er Cru En Sazenay is another fine success, exhibiting aromas of raspberries, plums, spices and violets. Medium to full-bodied, lively and precise, with tangy acids and a saline finish, it's a fine-boned, elegant wine from this steeply sloping site.

October 2021 (Vintage 2020)

From a 1.52ha vineyard near the village facing east and south. The wine ferments for two weeks with a modest inclusion of whole clusters prior to ageing in cask (20% new). The result has a bright pomegranate and red cherry fruit, with a menthol edge on the nose. There is a hint of reduction on the nose and lighter body on the palate than the other premiers crus, with bright acidity and a moderate finish. Approachable soon.

Allen Meadows, October 2018 (Vintage 2017)

Sweet spot Outstanding

A pungent nose of reduction and wood leads to full-bodied, concentrated and powerful flavors that possess a seductive mid-palate that contrasts considerably with the muscular, serious and very firmly structured finale. This mildly rustic effort is already nicely complex though it's clear that the tannins are going to require at least a decade to resolve, perhaps even a bit more.

William Kelley, July 2019 (Vintage 2017)

The 2017 Mercurey 1er Cru En Sazenay is the most youthfully reserved wine in the Château de Chamirey's portfolio this year, unfurling in the glass with suggestions of small red berries, raw cocoa, espresso roast, spices and soil tones. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and nicely concentrated, with lively acids, powdery tannins and an elegantly chalky finish.
