In 1884, the brothers António and Francisco Borges founded a company dedicated to banking, the sale of lottery tickets and tobacco. Then in 1891, they created the Sociedade dos Vinhos Borges, a company dedicated to the production and marketing of wine. In 1904, they bought the Quinta de Solaheira vineyard in the Douro river valley, laying the first foundations for what would define their true vocation. In 1991, the company added 46 hectares with the Quinta de Simaens vineyard, followed by another 74 hectares in the Dão region. Since 1998, Vinhos Borges has been part of the largest distribution company in Portugal, Grupo JMV. Perhaps the oldest wine-growing area in the world, the Douro is located in the northeast of Portugal, in the catchment area of the river of the same name. The valleys, the meanders and the variety of tones of the landscape constitute a unique painting, considered since 2001 as a wine area of the World Heritage of Humanity by Unesco. Initially delimited for the production of Port, this region was authorized to grant the denomination of origin Douro for red and white dry wines in 1982. In the region of Dão, which produces velvety and elegant wines considered among the best in the country, the whole 340 hectares of Vinhos Borges is planted with old vines of indigenous grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Gouveio and several others. Borges is 115 years of passionate viticulture, seeking perfection as the standard for its typically Portuguese wines, now exported to more than fifty countries on five continents, with a well-deserved reputation for the best quality vs. price ratios. The philosophy of the house: "Our centuries-old passion for nature and for people justifies so much effort to create wines of excellence, as well as the continuous investment for their recognition at the international level."
